magic in the air

Before Andy left, we got to go to a fun Harry Potter themed event. Highly entertaining!

Jas hates Hagrid. And the Death Eaters. And most everything, if we’re being honest. I can’t even go to Lowe’s this time of year because all the decorations in Lawn and Gardens freak her out. It’s okay though. I’m sure she won’t stay a tenderheart forever. One day I’ll get her to ride rollercoasters with me.

Instant downtime. For reading or taking a nap. Depends on how far away you are from the nearest book and how close you are to a lovely sunlit couch.

kind of like a honeymoon

I’m finally getting around to uploading pictures from when Andy was visiting on r&r. It’s funny how much of a train wreak I was after he left. Everything is just starting to shift back into place again. Takes about two weeks to get things back underway again.

Anyway, I ought to do a bit of catchup with my storyline. Soooo, let’s hop back to September 15th. After packing up the kidlets and meeting up with one of my great friends in Chicago, I got my wisdom teeth pried from my face!

I didn’t get sedated like I was thinking, just local anesthesia and it actually wasn’t anywhere near as traumatizing as I thought it would be. Jas’s birth still wins that top spot.

Actually it was kind of neat watching them pull out my top teeth. They came out really easy and looked all perfect. I wanted to take them with me and make earrings but apparently OSHA prohibits such things. My bottom two had to be broken and removed in pieces. That wasn’t too creepy until the nurse had to wipe blood off my forehead. Hello, reality check.

The anesthesia works for about an hour and a half before it wears off and I happened to be waiting at Walgreens as feeling came back in to my jaws. I was fidgeting and twitching all over the waiting area, totally spastic, with my face ballooned up like a frog.

When I got back in the car I took my pain pills sans water because I definitely forgot to buy some and didn’t want to walk back into the store. My friend stepped on the gas and took us through Chicago amidst the celebrating of Mexican independence day. At the time we were so confused by all the people waving mexican flags and gathering on corners. I was like, everyone is celebrating that I got my teeth out! Yay! Moral support! Also, DRIVE FASTER!

Being a native of Chicago, my friend drives far more reckless than I normally would have liked but I sure was not in the mood that night to worry about it. Plus both of the kidlets were cranky and sleepy. She was a superhero, powered by my sisters Imelda May CD.

We spent a few days hanging out at her place, visiting the sights, playing with impromptu toys, and annihilating medication [well, that was just me]. Then I got a call from Andy saying that he’d be home tomorrow. He called again the next day letting me know he was on his way and when we found out he’d be flying in to Chicago in just a bit, we decided to pick him up and surprise the kidlets. It was a great plan!

While we waited, we lunched and spent about twenty minutes wandering through the Shedd Aquarium. Then my friend raced us across town to pick him up at O’Hare. And this happened:

My favorite picture of the whole weekend. And I took a BUNCH. Because we were all so so so so so happy to see him and be all together as a family. =) It was great.

thoughts on my stories, because i’m an old lady now

books
a song of fire and ice ~ George RR Martin
Finished all of them, waiting for the next one anxiously. But since A Dance With Dragons was only released in April, I probably have AGES to wait. Uhhhhhh. Definitely going to be rereading this series a few times.

inheritance ~ Christopher Paolini
ANXIOUSLY AWAITING THIS BOOK. So I started rereading the series again. NOVEMBER 8th!

incidents in the life of a slave girl ~ Harriet Jacobs
I found this on Amazon and added it to my kindle but you can actually read it online. Do it! Such a compelling and powerful read. It’s when I come across stories like this that the american spirit resonates powerfully. Fireworks on the fourth don’t move me, reading about the defiance of a terrible system and the continuing struggle to improve oneself and the lives of their children? EXACTLY! That is my patriotism.

There should be a movie made about this book. But Hollywood and society has always seemed to shy away from stories involving slavery. To me, this does a great injustice to the people who lived in those times and found the courage to change their lives and worlds. These people should be celebrated, stories heard.

the unparalleled adventures of one Hans Peall ~ Edgar Allen Poe
A curious and enjoyable short story. Not nearly as morbid as some of his other works that I’ve read. I enjoyed the applications of science and physics that his character used, particularly the ending. Available on Project Gutenberg in the same format as I have for my kindle. Working on The Gold-Bug at the moment.

up from slavery: an autobiography ~ Booker T Washington
This is also available to read online at Project Gutenberg. An excellent book that gives a lot of insight into alternate education and its benefits. While it does chronicle his life, much of his efforts were in educating the people around him. It’s really inspiring reading about how far he came and what a monumental difference he made to the south. I thought he also made a really strong case for school curriculum with labor based classes.

tv
charlie’s angels
Started watching this on a whim and I can’t help but enjoy it. I wish the character of Eve French had been cast as someone else, because Minka Kelly just doesn’t sell her character very well. She’s like a cute, watered down Blair Waldorf. It’s confusing. Apparently this show is getting the axe, but I hope Annie Ilonzeh and Rachael Taylor get new projects soon.

game of thrones
Finally watched the entire season. Loved it! I liked how they humanized Cersei a bit more than they did in the books. I would definitely be bitter in her circumstances. Arya and Tyrion were perfection. I felt no pity for Sansa at all… And that’s why you don’t tell lies. Looking forward to the next season!

glee
I’m kind of mad that they turned Mercedes into a diva. She HAS been ignored, although I guess they wanted a Dreamgirls tie-in. Also, can Tina get a storyline other than as a simpering girlfriend? I prefer the pink-punk Quinn.

gossip girl
I get this sinking feeling that Blair’s baby is actually Chucks and her wedding will go up in flames. I HOPE THAT IS NOT THE CASE! I love the thought of her wrangling with Louis sister in Monaco. And the thought of playdates with Georgina? Totally amusing! You know she’d be up for a trip to Monaco in a heartbeat.

Also, what is up with Nate and sexing older women? Gross. I’d rather get a job because my family knows some people than because of skills in the bedroom. His logic is flawed. Hope she passes him up for Chuck and that Nate finds someone closer to his age range. There is bound to be someone in Columbia. Or introduce him to Louis’ sister.

And someone make Ivy/Charlie go away. Stat.

hart of dixie
This was another watch on a whim thing. I like it and detest it at the same time. But Jaimie King is so adorable and sour in her role that you just keep watching. Also there is an alligator named Burt Reynolds who randomly wanders by. It’s classic CW bubblegum tv.

ncis
Abby finding her sibling! Heart-to-heart with Gibbs! So sweet. Just win, all around.

parks and rec
Absolute gold this season. I feel like I reblog every screencap I find on tumblr. So many wonderful things, I don’t know where to start. Leslie Knope made Batman cry.

the office
I’m enjoying this sans Michael Scott. I’m not sure where the Erin-Andy storyline will go now that he is manager and this makes me sad because I have been routing for them. Because it’s another Erin and Andy couple!! And they are so charmingly ditzy happy together.

The rivalry between Angela and Pam is brilliant. Smiley spiteful pregnant women, what is not to love? And wtf is Gabe doing back?
