painting with all the colors

I found an interesting project today by JeongMee Yoon: The Pink & Blue Project

I’ve always been a bit of a nut about how much pink clothing Jas receives from well-meaning relatives. After the explosion of pink baby clothes at her baby shower, I asked that future gifts of clothes favor other colors. Let us not neglect Roy G Biv! Relatives thought I was a bit of a nut, if not a bit presumptuous, but seemed up to the challenge. Makes shopping more interesting. =)

An aunt found her first coat in a beautiful ice blue and every year since I’ve tried to make sure she has a light blue coat. Totally works with her eyes. Actually, I try and buy a lot of blue for her. Not so much to stick it to stereotypes as much as the fact that she looks gorgeous in blue. I also like her in yellow or purple.

Interestingly, I think she’s subconsciously picked up on the blue I’ve been pushing. This summer I got her started in dance classes and when we got to the shop to pick out dresses she selected black, blue, and pink. Also, I was internally gushing the whole time because there were so many cute outfits! But being the Jasbaz, she was not filled with proper enthusiasm until half an hour later. Anyhow, the dresses were super cute and even though I’d only planned on buying two I just could not help myself. The black one resembles Audrey Hepburn style, the blue is a layered dream, and the pink… well it had dance outlined in rhinestones so Jas liked it. I don’t think I have a picture of it actually.

Anyway, each time we’d get ready for dance I’d let her pick which one she wanted to wear. It was BLUE and BLUE and BLACK until the fourth day. She said she wanted to wear pink like all the other little girls. I will admit, that made me kind of sad, but I tried to be supportive. Yay pink with sparkles! I still think of her as a baby. I’m not sure I’m ready for her to try to conform to society, be nervous about fitting in. Possibly I’ve been wearing mama blinders because I know she’s been more reluctant in social settings but I didn’t think the shift would move to clothing so soon.

Growing pains, I guess?

So yes. As a shopper who tries to utilize all colors of the rainbow for my children’s wardrobe, I found this study curious and slightly upsetting. As parents, we don’t really have a lot of time to shop the market so a lot of things we buy are because they are available. With toys, the color preference is ridiculous. Just walk down the Barbie aisle without sunglasses.

Cody is a lot easier because I like him in green. It goes with his eyes. Also plaid because I like to dress him like Clark Kent. What? It’s cute as hell. Check it, I have documentation.

The trick is finding something without a dump truck on it. Yay for subtle pushing towards lifelong aspirations as a construction worker. Fuck that shit, get him a suit so he can prep to be President. If Jas doesn’t take over the world first. As the kidlets get older, they will have much greater say in her wardrobe choices. But for now they’ll wear every shade under the sun, even if that means I have to search longer to find them.

cleaning

I’ve been doing a bit more housekeeping around the domain, freshening things up. =) I still have bunches of postcards to upload to secrets, and about three years worth of photos to spectrum, but at least things are a little nicer. Also, I want to get my twitter feed all pretty but I really need to get some sleep or I’ll be mowed over in the morning by hyperactive kidlets. I mean, I will anyway since they are morning skylarks. But no need to give them too much more advantage than necessary.

School will be starting soon, which I’m beyond excited about. Also: nervous. Seeing as how I haven’t secured a sitter for Cody yet. Um… Need to get on that.

Also I’ve started taking mehendi lessons with an awesome lady. The past two times we met I’ve been positively clawing at the windows to get out of my house and in the company of rational adults. So some of my enthusiasm is probably linked to that as well. I’ve posted a few shots on my tumblr but I’ll probably work up something a bit more permanent once I’ve mastered some basic designs. Right now I’m mostly playing around trying to improve my flow and making up the cones. I think I need thicker plastic baggies to work with.

And like all good things in life, when it seems I have most things straightened out, something has to go to shit. This time it’s my JUST FIXED washing machine. Deciding that it does not want to drain water. Again. Repetitive problems, how I loathe thee. Monday I get to spread the happy news to the folks at Sears, again. As the laundry pile grows taller and more wobbly. =D Yay for life’s curveballs!

enjoying the summer

Tip for tiring out kidlets: acquire soccer ball. Visit park with large field. PUNT that ball. Inspire children to chase. Repeat as needed until they crawl back to the car or lay down in the grass.

in which i ramble about my garden

First things first. This week of killer heat has probably ravaged my garden. I know for a fact that almost all of my impatiens are dead and my poor caladiums have fallen on their leaf-faces. Not enough watering and also RABBITS. Fucking rabbits. No really. Ignore all of those plants over there and just nibble on the ones that I’m trying to grow. Feast in a neighbor yard, please.

But we shall get past this. The summer is only halfway through, mayhap they will revive. Until then, here are some pretty pictures to reminisce with.

Can we say flowering pepper plant? With baby bell pepper? YES WE CAN. =D I try to make sure and water it every day. I fail. But I try. The pepper? Getting bigger and looking delicious. YAY. I cannot wait to stir-fry it. Or even just rinse it off and munch on it.

My sweet pea plant is one of the most prolific plants in my garden. It comes up every year, everywhere, hanging on everything. I love it when it blooms and I hate having to hack it off the chainlink every winter. This time I got a picture of the pea pods too. I meant to collect the pea seeds but I think most of them have fallen already for next year. Jas is forever plucking stems of the blooms and giving them to people, or she’ll loop them through Kayla’s collar for some flair.

I will forever remember my caladium looking like this. Splendid. I hope it perks back up and shoots out leaves everywhere. It was so pretty.

My fabulous potted butterfly bush. I am kind of ridiculously proud of it. As it is I’m debating planting it in the back yard because apparently they can grow up to five feet in a season. The thought of this plant towering in the yard with all those pretty blooms… well, it’s terribly enticing. But if I keep it potted, then I can take it with me next year. Decisions, decisions.

And speaking of plants that got left, here is my lovely french hybrid white lilac tree. It has grown from the twig of last year into an actual plant with leaves. Finally! Last year was a test of patience. I remember opening the box and looking at the stick with a few roots like… I’m pretty sure I overpaid. But it’s growing. You can’t tell from the angle, but it’s a foot tall. And hopefully it will bloom next spring. =) Grow, lilac, grow!

Plant deaths of the year: FOUR mint plants (uprooted by enterprising kidlets), my 3 coleus plants (at least, I’m fairly certain they are goners, water them as I might), all my lavendar seedlings (also kidlets), one of my two tomato plants.

Plants I thought would die but didn’t: the SEVEN rose of sharon’s I got from a guy on craiglist who was redoing his landscaping. Free to those who wanted to dig them out. Actually, I only dug out one but it was a monster and so while I was unearthing the roots he got a bunch more for me. THEY HAVE BUDS ON THEM! The other tomato plant, since I haven’t watered it very often at all.

Plants I want to get this fall: more daylilies for along the fence. I want a multitude of colors. Then if I break up my bearded iris I can intersperse them and what a happy picture that would make.

ALSO! I’m killing off my brainstream page because I’ve hooked up the homepage with the tumblr/twitter/flickr feeds. Holla. So you know. You can keep tabs that way too.
